About Gripped
Gripped magazine is about to enter its twenty-fourth year of publishing. In the late ‘90s, rock climbing experienced a boom following the advent of indoor climbing facilities like the now legendary Joe Rockhead’s. This brought the thrill of climbing into the view of a broader reach of fun seekers, which resulted in greater interest in all forms of the sport, from alpinism to bouldering. Participation in rock climbing has gown steadily, and it is now an Olympic sport.
Ontario climbing pioneer Dave Smart partnered with publisher Sam Cohen, and Gripped was born. The goal was to provide a truly Canadian alternative to already established U.S. titles Climbing, and Rock & Ice.
The Project
Roseander Main has been involved with Gripped since issue six – it’s now somewhere around 132. We created a restrained, modern and bold architecture for the magazine. We continue to add dynamism to the art direction with strong structural moves, rather than with decorative content. Actually, the approach is a bit like climbing itself. We’re very proud of this one.
We’ve made 100+ issues of Gripped. The design has changed very little since the beginning—now in volume 24—we strived to build a classic alpine journal. We nailed it.

Gripped magazine reaches over 38,000 monthly readers.
